Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a young child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford began acting during her teens and became part of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time but Ford realized this was not the best location for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning a place on her fourth attempt. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition as a stand-up comedian, which has been added to her resume in 1996.
